Australia e-bike rules: 250W, 25 km/h, and the states

Australia is closer to the EU ceiling than to a US Class 2. The useful buyer version is 250 watts continuous and assistance that stops at 25 km/h, with pedals that work. States and territories still add helmet, path, and “power-assisted bicycle” language on top.

This brief is the Australia counterpart to our EU 250W and Canada pages. It is not legal advice. Confirm the current state or territory page before you buy.

The 20-second version

LayerWhat it usually decides
National / importProduct sold as a bicycle-like e-bike vs a moped
State / territoryHelmet, path access, whether a faster bike needs extra paperwork
Council / trailLocal bans on shared paths and parks

If the shop only shouts “750W” and 32 km/h with no Australian standard talk, you have a US spec sheet.

The 250W / 25 km/h floor

Pedals that propel the bike, assistance that cuts at 25 km/h, and a 250W continuous rating are the usual floor that keeps the bike in the bicycle-like bucket. Peak watts on the same page do not rewrite that floor.

A speed that assists to 45 km/h is a different vehicle in most Australian rules — expect extra paperwork, not “still just an e-bike.”

States are not copies

NSW is not Victoria. Queensland is not Western Australia. Helmet rules and whether you may use a shared path change by state and sometimes by council.

We will not fake an eight-jurisdiction table in year one. We will add a state row only when a rule changes which bike you should buy. Until then: open the state transport page for where you live.

US Class stickers do not map

Class 1 to 20 mph is already over 25 km/h. Class 2 throttle at road speed fails the usual EAPC-style test. Class 3 to 28 mph is far outside.

Do not ship a Velotric Discover to Sydney and assume the US class switch makes it Australian.

How The Ride Brief will use this

Australia rows, when we add a checkout path, must show 25 km/h and 250W continuous — or a clearly labeled faster category we do not pretend is an EAPC-style bicycle. The current commuter shortlist is US + EU only. That split stays.

Official starting point: the federal / state e-bike page for where you live — not a US marketplace listing.
