The bike is not the commute. Lights you can see, a lock you will actually use, and a way to carry a bag without wrecking the warranty are the first three buys. Everything else can wait a month.
This brief is what The Ride Brief puts on a first-time commuter list. It is not a shop dump. We have not lab-tested every SKU. Prefer the same brand as the bike when the booklet says so.
The 20-second version
| Buy first | Why | Wait |
|---|---|---|
| Lights that work in rain | You commute in the dark more than you think | Fancy beam numbers |
| A lock you will carry | The cheap cable is a courtesy to thieves | A second lock “for later” |
| Rack or bags the brand lists | Frame mounts and warranty | A clamp that scars the tube |
| Helmet that fits | Paths and Class 3 rules | The cheapest shell on a marketplace |
If the shop will not sell a rack that matches the frame, you do not have a commute setup. You have a bike.
Lights
Daytime running lights do not replace a light you can aim at a wet corner. Buy a front and a rear that mount without chewing the bar tape, and keep the charge cable in the same bag as the bike charger.
Do not steal power from a pack the booklet says is not a power bank unless the spec sheet gives you a port.
Locks
The lock you leave at home is not a lock. U-lock or a heavy folding lock for the frame; cable only for a bag. Register the serial the same week you unbox.
Racks and bags
Use the mounts the frame already has. A clamp-on rack that crushes a carbon-look stay is a warranty file you will lose.
Panniers beat a backpack the first week your shirt stops arriving wet. Weight still counts against range — see the range brief.
Helmets
Fit first. Class 3 and some paths will ask for a helmet even when a Class 1 path does not. ASTM or CPSC on the label is the usual US floor. Do not buy a motorcycle lid for an EAPC unless a local rule says so.
Chargers and one spare
One OEM charger at home. One OEM charger at work if the commute is the whole pack. No marketplace brick.
How this page ties to the shortlist
US rows should link the accessories the brand already sells for that frame. EU rows should not assume a US rack will bolt on. The current commuter shortlist already isolates Lankeleisi.fr. That split stays.

Official starting points stay on the law pages — not on a marketplace bundle.
